The Recycler.com is home to many sweet, furry faces eager to meet their people they can love for the rest of their days. When you are looking for a pet, it is important to have an idea of the qualities you are looking for in a pet you will be sharing your home with for years to come. Are you an athlete looking for an adventure buddy? Are you older and would prefer an easy-going companion? Or perhaps you have a family and need a calm, patient animal that does well with other animals and children. Whatever the case, finding that perfect new addition to the family takes time and exploration to find the right fit.

Looking at ads for rescued pets online can be a wonderful tool in finding your next pet. A great benefit to looking for animals on the Recycler.com is that you can narrow down your search by finding plenty of adoptables in your area that have personality and behavior information on their pages. Save plenty of time finding your perfect match, and feel good about getting a complete search in your area, without having to commute to multiple rescues.

Rex, Roxie rexand Bastit are 3 adoptable dogs (of thousands) whose profiles are visible from our website.

This handsome boy to the left is Rex from Ojai, California. This boy arrived at the shelter at the beginning of December. He was very thin and unsure of his new surroundings, but quickly improved with the love and care from staff and volunteers. Rex is now looking and feeling great and ready for his forever home! The shelter he is at is still getting to know this charming guy and will keep everyone updated when they learn more.

To view Rex’s ad, click here.roxie

Roxie is a very sweet girl from West Covina, CA. She is a chihuahua mix who is smaller in stature for those with limited space or prefer smaller dogs. What makes Roxie unique is that she is a young dog with a very sweet dispostion. She loves other dogs and does really well with children! She would make a great addition to a family with kids, other pets, or for someone who sees themselves taking their social pup out to the park frequently.

To see Roxie’s page, click here.

Lastly we have Bastit, the stunning black and white beauty. A boxer – American Staffordshire Terrier mix, you can tell just from her photo that this girl is 100% athlete. Named after the ancient Egyptian cat, this sleek beauty will turn heads. Still young (approx. 2 years old) and is small for her breed but she is mighty in stature. She is full of energy and will bastitrequire someone who is familiar with the power breeds. Despite her high energy, Bastit is still very puppy-like and loves to play with toys. But her favorite thing in the entire world is cuddle in everyone’s lap. Bastit is a VERY VERY affectionate dog…as long as you don’t have a tail to wag or bark at her. She is very dog aggressive and cannot be adopted into a home with any existing dogs.

If you are an experienced owner who can provide Bastit with the environment she needs, you can see her ad here.

Foods You Should Never Give Your Dog

by Kathryne on January 10, 2017

Many people love to share food with dogs for many reasons. Sometimes as a treat, sometimes out of love and a desire to improvedogfood3 our dog’s nutrition, or sometimes as a way to boycott conventional dog food. Whatever your reason for introducing whole foods to your dog’s diet, there is one very importan
t fundamental rule to be aware of: just because it is good for you does NOT mean that it is good for your dog.

We aren’t just talking about chocolate. Many “human” foods that we consider to be very healthy can negatively impact a dog’s health.

Here’s a video of 5 foods commonly given to dogs that are commonly mistaken as harmless:

Surprised? Understandable. We normally would never percieve these foods as harmful to humans and wouldn’t expect them to be to our dogs, either. But if you are going to pass the plate (or bowl) to your pooch every now and then, here is a good starting list of things you will want to keep out of your dog’s reach.

List of Foods Not to Feed Your Dog

Here’s an alphabetized list of foods that are unsafe and unfit for canine consumption, many of which are toxic for dogs. We’ll be updating it and adding foods as we learn more. The ones in red italics are especially dangerous and often poisonous for canines.

And be sure to look below this list for a helpful and sharable Infographic to print out and keep on your fridge.

Alcohol – I’m sure you’ve heard of the birthday parties where the dog accidentally gets into some of the spilled keg beer, and then gets all silly to the amusement of the crowd. While it may be funny to you, it’s not funny to your dog. Alcohol can cause not only intoxication, lack of coordination, poor breathing, and abnormal acidity, but potentially even coma and/or death.

Apple Seeds – The casing of apple seeds are toxic to a dog as they contain a natural chemical (amygdlin) that releases cyanide when digested. This is really only an issue if a large amount was eaten and the seed were chewed up by the dog, causing it to enter its blood stream. But to play it safe, be sure to core and seed apples before you feed them to your dog.

Avocado – Avocados contain Persin, which can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and heart congestion.

Baby Food – Baby food by itself isn’t terrible, just make sure it doesn’t contain any onion powder. Baby food also doesn’t contain all the nutrients a dog relies on for a healthy, well maintained diet.

Cooked Bones – When it comes to bones, the dangerpets4s that cooked bones can easily splinter when chewed by your dog. Raw (uncooked) bones, however, are appropriate and good for both your dog’s nutritional and teeth.

Candy and Chewing Gum – Not only does candy contain sugar, but it often contains Xylitol, which can lead to the over-release of insulin, kidney fa

Cat Food – Not that they would want this anyway, but cat food contains proteins and fats that are targeted at the diet of a cat, not a dog. The protein and fat levels in cat food are too high for your dog, and not healthy.

Chocolate – You’ve probably heard this before, but chocolate is a definite no no for your pup. And it’s not just about caffeine, which is enough to harm your dog by itself, but theobromine and theophylline, which can be toxic, cause panting, vomiting, and diarrhea, and damage your dog’s heart and nervous systems.

Citrus Oil Extracts – Can cause vomiting.

Coffee – Not sure why you would give your dog coffee, but pretty much the same applies here as to chocolate. This is essentially poison for your dog if ingested.

Corn on the Cob– This is a sure way to get your dog’s intestine blocked. The corn is digested, but the cob gets lodged in the small intestine, and if it’s not removed surgically, can prove fatal to your dog. Additionally, too much corn kernels can upset the digestive tract as well so be cautious to not feed too much.

Fat Trimmings – Can cause pancreatitis.

Fish – The primary fish that you need to be careful about are salmon and trout. Raw salmon can be fatal to dogs if the fish is infected with a certain parasite, Nanophyetus salmincola. The parasite itself isn’t dangerous to dogs, but is often infected with a bacteria called Neorickettsia helminthoeca, which in many cases is fatal to dogs if not treated properly. If diagnosis occurs early on, the dog has a great chance of recovering. Cooked salmon is fine as it kills the parasite.

Garlic – While garlic can be okay for dogs in very small amounts (and even beneficial for flea treatment), larger amounts can be risky. Garlic is related to onions which is toxic for dogs so it may be best to just avoid it.dogfood2

Grapes and Raisins – This is one that lots of dog owners are unaware of. Grapes contain a toxin that can cause severe liver damage and kidney failure. We’ve heard stories of dogs dying from only a handful of grapes so do not feed your pup this toxic food.

Hops – An ingredient in beer that can be toxic to your dog. The consumption of hops by your dog can cause panting, an increased heart rate, fever, seizures, and even death.

Human Vitamins – Some human vitamins are okay to use, but the key is comparing the ingredients (all of them – active and inactive) to the vitamins your vet subscribes for your dog (often you can get the human equivalent for much less money). Make sure there’s no iron – iron can damage the digestive system lining, and prove poisonous for the liver and kidneys.

Liver – In small amounts, liver is great but avoid feeding too much liver to your dog. Liver contains quite a bit of Vitamin A, which can adversely affect your pup’s muscles and bones.

Macadamia Nuts – These contain a toxin that can inhibit locomotory activities, resulting in weakness, panting, swollen limbs, and tremors as well as possible damage to your dog’s digestive, nervous, and muscle systems.

Chihuahua with big boneMarijuana – Not that you would pass the bong to your dog, but if you do, you should know that marijuana can adversely affect your pup’s nervous system and heart rate, and induce vomiting. Read more about Dogs and Marijuana.

Milk and Dairy Products – While small doses aren’t going to kill your dog, you could get some smelly farts and some nasty cases of diarrhea. Why? Dogs are lactose intolerant (as are an increasing number of humans today), and don’t have enough of the lactase enzyme to properly digest dairy foods. If you really need to give them dairy, look into lactose-free dairy products.

Mushrooms – Just as the wrong mushroom can be fatal to humans, the same applies to dogs. Don’t mess with them.

Onions and Chives – No matter what form they’re in (dry, raw, cooked, powder, within other foods), onions are some of the absolute worst foods you could possibly give your pup (it’s poisonous for dogs, and its even worse for cats). They contain disulfides and sulfoxides (thiosulphate), both of which can cause anemia and damage red blood cells.

Persimmons, Peaches and Plums – Peach pits are not only a choke hazard they contain amygdalin, a cyanide and sugar compound that degrades into hydrogen cyanide (HCN) when metabolized. Pear seeds also contain trace amount of arsenic and are dangerous. So if you live in an area that is home to persimmon, peach, or plum trees, look out. Persimmon seeds and peach and plum pits can cause intestinal obstruction and enteritis. You’ll want to make sure there aren’t any wild persimmon or other fruit trees that produce seeds growing in your backyard. If you notice your dog pooping all over the place, and see a bunch of seeds or pits in their waste, you’ll need to break out the saw and chop down some trees.

Rhubarb and Tomato Leaves – These contain oxalates, which can adversely affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems.

Raw Fish – Another vitamin B (Thiamine) deficiency can result from the regular consumption of raw fish. Loss of appetite will be common, followed by seizures, and in rare instances, death.

Salt – Just like salt isn’t the healthiest thing for humans, it’s even less healthy for dogs. Too much of it can lead to an imbalance in electrolyte levels, dehydration and potentially diarrhea.

Spices containing Capsaicin – Capsaicin, found in chili powder, paprika, and just about any other pepper (bell, chili, etc.), is an irritant for mammals of all shape and size.

String – While not a food itself, foods can often contain or be similar to string (ie. meat you’ve wrapped for the oven). If your dog were to eat a string, it could get stuck in their digestive tract and cause complications.

Sugar – This applies to any food containing sugar. Make sure you check the ingredient label for human foods – corn syrup (which is a less expensive form of sugar or glucose) is found in just about everything these days. Too much sugar for your pup can lead to dental issues, obesity, and even diabetes.

Tobacco – A major toxic hazard for dogs (and humans). The effects nicotine has on dogs are far worse than on humans. Nicotine can damage your pup’s digestive and nervous systems, increase their heart rate, make them pass out, and ultimately result in death.

Xylitol – A sugar alcohol found in gum, candies, baked goods, and other sugar-substituted items, Xylitol, while causing no apparent harm to humans, is extremely toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can cause low blood sugar, seizures, liver failure, even death for your pup.

Yeast (on its own or in dough) – Just like yeast rises in bread, it will also expand and rise within your pup’s tummy. Make sure they don’t get any. While mild cases will cause gas, lots of farting, and discomfort – too much of it could rupture their stomach and intestines.

Have you ever wanted a Chinchilla?

by Kathryne on January 9, 2017

Chinchillas are quick, perky little animals. If you have never met the acquaintance of one, they have a personality similar to a park squirrel.

Obviously adorable, Chinchillas have many characteristics that make them great pets. However, they are not suited for everyone, especially not for children because they are small and fragile and if they are squeezed too tight – they will bite. Many find them preferable to all other rodents because of their lack of unpleasant smell and unusually long life spans.

What Are Their Good Qualities?

Their good qualities include a beautiful soft lush fur, an inquisitive, boisterous nature and no objectionable noises. They are very low-maintenance pets.

What Are Their Not-So-Good Qualities?

On the down side, chinchillas are somewhat high-strung, and they have relatively short attention spans. They also do not tolerate hot weather or high humidity well.

Where Do These Animals Come From?

Chinchillas originated in the Andes Mountains of South America where they inhabit crevices in the rocks. Chinchillas come in a variety of colors. The most common color is silvery gray; but the also come in white, beige, ebony and sapphire (super-violet) color.

What Are Some Characteristics Of Chinchillas?

Adult female chinchillas weight about a pound-and-a-half and are a bit bigger than males. Chinchillas can live 12 to 20 years – an exceptionally long life span for a rodent. They also have an exceptionally long pregnancy, 111 days. So babies pop out ready-to-go like their distant cousins, the guinea pigs. Chinchillas will not thrive above 78 degrees Fahrenheit (25.8C) or in humidity over 40%.

Buying A Chinchilla

Unfortunately, pet stores are in business to make a profit – not to provide you with a friendly, healthy pet. Pet shops are the worst place to obtain a chinchilla. If you have not yet obtained your pet, go to a reputable breeder such as those that are members of The Chinchilla Club and ask the breeder for the phone number of satisfied clients in your area.

Chinchilla personalities are determined during their first month of age. They need to be handled and petted frequently after they are born or they will grow up skittish and aggressive. An ideal age to purchase your chinchilla is 10 weeks of age.

If possible, check both the parents and the youngster for problems before you become attached to a Chinchilla. Be cautious of watery or pasty eyes, drooling (tooth alignment problems), wool pulling or missing areas of fur. Buying directly from a breeder who willingly supplies satisfied contacts who have purchased her animals is a good idea. Most of the problem animals are purchased through pet stores. Common problems in pet store purchased chinchillas are wool pulling due to boredom and stress and malocclusion due to improper diet and genetics. Aggression is a problem in animals not socialized to people at a young enough age.chinchilla-2

No, your eyes do not deceive you! This 1968 Ford Bronco Classic on the Recycler.com is a great opportunity to own an original Bronco. These can be a bit tough to find in this kind of condition, so if you are into the $19,500 asking price, you might want to put in any inquiries sooner rather than later.bronco

Broncos were produced from 1966 through 1996 and so this (obviously) was one of the earliest years ever made, adding to the rarity of finding one restored to this level.

This particular vehicle is 90% restored, and in very good condition. Runs like a champ, starts right up and is ready and able to be a daily driver.
Some new editions in the past 2 years include:
Power steering, front disc brakes, rebuilt carburetor, electronic ignition, springs, shocks, tires, transfer case, auto, transmission, stainless steel brake lines, master cylinder & more

If interested, check out the Recycler.com ad here!

Starting a new year can mean a great many things to a lot of people. While infamous for being the month of initiating new diets and exercise regimens to setting personal, career and financial goals, it can also be a great time to find new sources of simple joys. And if you’re goals for the year entail just that, you may have cuddly, furry little critters on your mind.

Recycler.com is a great place to find thousands of puppies, kittens, reptiles, rabbits, and more for sale from reputable breeders. But possibkona1ly even better, you can make 2017 a great year for both you and an adoptable animal looking for a forever home. Simply search for adoptable pets in your area to find a variety of pets in either shelters or in foster homes nearby so you can find your perfect pet-match!

Take Kona — one of many adoptable sweethearts that can be viewed on the Recycler.com — for instance! This tabby girl is one of many kitties living in a foster home awaiting the day to make someone a very lucky human.  A beautiful red Tabby, Kona is an outgoing, very active and playful young adult. She and her brother Perry (the black cat in the background) were both rescued from a shelter and now live in a multi-cat foster home.kona3

She is a very sweet and gentle girl who runs around her foster home. She spends her days playing with the other cats and two medium size dogs, so she would do kona2well in a home with other existing pets. She is not, however, good with young kids — kids must be teenagers or older.

If you are interested, you can find Kona’s page here on the Recycler.com.

Louie’s Holiday Wish: A Loving Home

by Kathryne on November 30, 2016

download-2

Meet Louie!

Born February 27, 2016, King Louis, AKA “Louie,” is one of the sweetest
kitties you’ll ever meet. He’s also one of the most adorable! This young kitty is solid black with big, green eyes that pierce in stark condownloadtrast with his sleek coat. He’s also small in stature and will more than likely be smaller into adulthood as well. But personality is the icing on the cake with any pet, and rest assured Louie has plenty of it to go around.

If  you are th239662555e kind of person who loves a little helper following you around and keeping you company, Louie is your boy! He likes to crawl under covers and is very
helpful when sheets are being changed on a bed, likes to help you read the newspaper, likes to accompany you to the bathroom and then help wash your hands, and is pretty much game to be there to help you tackle all of your daily chores. As you can tell, he is handy to have around!
He is extremely active and needs some space to tear around in. Also, having a truly loving nature he loves hanging with his human as well as with a kitty companion, so he would do very well in a home that can provide a good stomping ground and companionship. While he is a little shy at first with strangers, he warms up quickly with soft-spoken people. And don’t forget the brushing! This is a cat who understands the value of a good spa treatment and absolutely loves to be brushed. If you or  your family enjoy having a cat on your lap every night, then you are exactly the kind of home this sweet boy would thrive in.

Just for a little snippet into a typical, Luoie-style pay session, check out this video of him playing with some of his friends!

Arguably one of the best known names in 2-wheeled cruising, Harley-Davidson has a long history of having a large following, and for good reason. Harley-Davidson is the iconic American motorcycle manufacturer. Founded out of a small shed in 1903 by William S. Harley and brothers Arthur and Walter Davidson in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Motor Company produces traditional cruiser motorcycles utilizing air-cooled V-Twin engines.

When Harley and Davidson produced and sold their first motorcycle in 1903, they were one of many small motorcycle marques springing up across the country. Flash forward more than a century and the Harley-Davidson brand is so rooted in American culture that the history of the company intertwines with the history of America itself.

Harley-Davidson incorporated in 1907, with William Davidson officially joining forces with his two brothers and Harley. Setting down roots in Milwaukee, Harley-Davidson began hiring employees and by the end of the decade were producing bikes using its signature 45-degree air-cooled V-Twin.

During the next decade H-D continued to expand. Many sales were generated by Uncle Sam, with the American military sourcing Harley motorcycles during the First World War. The rest is history, which can be read more in depth from MotoUSA.com here

And now in honor of the classic American name, we have compiled a list of some of the Harley-Davidsons available here on the Recycler.com!873323

First up, this 1992 HARLEY HERITAGE CLASSIC from Santa Barbara, CA. Excellent condition, garaged, two tone paint, white wall tires, saddlebags, rear seat, must sell, $8000. Definitely worth checking this one out.

Second is a 2010 HARLEY ROAD GLIDE Custom 103″ 107HP 103 Torque, Dave Mackey engine, Trans has a Baker reverse, Primo racing clutch, race tech front end, spalding sidecar, american legend cargo trailer, 600 amp 2 marine speakers in hack, serious inquires only $40,000. Plus that license plate…2194041

A 2009 HARLEY-DAVIDSON FLHX FLHX. We’ll let the ad speak for itself on this one: “THIS BIKE IS IN SHOWROOM CONDITION AND IS ON OUR SHOWROOM FLOOR!!! MUST SEE TO APPRECIATE!!! EXTREMELY LOW MILES!!! HURRY THIS ONE WON’T LAST ESPECIALLY AT THIS PRICE!!! COME BY TODAY TO SEE THIS ONE IN PERSON.1584.0L, 2 CYLINDER, FUEL INJECTED, NOT SPECIFIED , DARK RED, , 3,381 miles, Stock #: P2650, VIN: 1HD1KB4119Y663135”1hd1kb4119y663135-1c
